Okay, so you forgot where you parked. You told the same story twice. You lost your train of thought—again.
We joke about having “senior moments.” But if they start piling up, you might wonder: Is this normal… or the start of something worse?
I used to assume that meant Alzheimer’s. But I’ve since learned those same symptoms—brain fog, distraction, forgetfulness—can show up in three very different conditions:
FCD – Functional Cognitive Disorder
MCI – Mild Cognitive Impairment
Alzheimer’s Disease
They may look similar on the surface—but the causes, prognosis, and treatment options are very different.

💭 What About Normal Aging?
Some memory changes are a natural part of getting older. Slower recall. Taking an extra beat to find the right word.
That’s normal.
But if you’re forgetting entire conversations… Or if your fog is getting worse over time… Or if other people are noticing your changes…
It might be time to dig a little deeper.
🔍 Let’s Break It Down
I'll look into each condition separately, then talk about what we can do...no matter which feels most familiar.

🧠FCD:
Functional Cognitive Disorder
This is not dementia. Your brain isn’t degenerating.
But it can feel like it’s failing. You forget words, lose your place, get distracted. The key trait? YOU notice it. Often more than anyone else around you.
FCD often shows up in people who are:
Under high stress
Sleep-deprived
Recovering from mild head injury
Prone to anxiety or perfectionism
The hopeful part? Most people do not progress to dementia. And many improve—especially when sleep and stress are addressed.

🧠MCI:
Mild Cognitive Impairment
This lives in the middle ground.
It’s more than fog. It’s measurable, and others may notice too. But it’s not yet dementia—you’re still functioning independently.
And here’s what people often don’t realize: Most people with MCI do not go on to develop Alzheimer’s.
Some even get better.
MCI can follow illness, sleep issues, too many medications, or blood sugar instability. For many, it’s a warning, not a verdict.
Cleaning up your habits might make a real difference.

🧠Early Alzheimer's Disease
This is the one we all dread.
The one I once assumed was the only explanation.
You’ve probably heard the usual about Alzheimer's--
It’s progressive
It’s genetic
There’s nothing we can do
But that’s not the full story.
In fact:
Less than 10% of Alzheimer’s cases are genetic.
That means 90% are metabolic.
Yes, it can get worse. But some people improve, especially when caught early and addressed with lifestyle changes.

Common Roots
Let's back up. What does that mean, metabolic?
When we talk metabolism, we are talking about the way your body functions to sustain your life.
And we now know that many types of serious noninfectious chronic disease stems from a common metabolic dysfunction: chronic inflammation. Heart disease. Type 2 Diabetes. Some Cancers. And cognitive disorders.
That’s good news. Because it means we’re not powerless.
We know what causes chronic inflammation. And we know what reduces chronic inflammation. And what what reduces chronic inflammation...supports a healthy brain.
To my way of thinking, regardless of the label, we all would do well to drop bad habits and adopt healthy habits that contribute to reducing inflammation and supporting brain health.
