Hopeless. Powerless. Pitiful... Wrong.

I Thought It Hopeless.

I Was Wrong.

"I had hope. My God. I live on it.” ~ Miranda Priestly

When I could no longer deny my early Alzheimer's symptoms, I had no hope. None.

I knew Alzheimer's was genetic. Degenerative. Inevitable. My sainted mother suffered from the Alzheimer's, and now it was my turn.

Or was it?

Let's talk about it.

🧠 My Mother. Myself.

When we finally realized that my sainted mother was struggling far beyond senior moments, we swept into action.

-. Appointments with a neurologist.

-. All the recommended medications, multiple times daily.

-. Shots of coconut oil three times a day with my sainted father.

Nothing touched the Alzheimer's.

Then I began struggling far beyond senior moments.

I knew nothing would help.

🧠 I took action.

I took action based on what I believed to be true.

I had a degenerative disease. I was no longer able to perform reliably at work.

So I retired early.

Of course I did.

There was no reason to think I would get better.

After I retired, I started looking into advice dementia patients.

Exercise more. Reduce stress. Sleep better. Avoid toxins.

Check. Check. Check.

Meanwhile, I began listening to health transformation stories. You know, the "Keto saved my life" videos. People were losing weight, yes, but they were also improving their health in ways that didn’t seem possible.

I believed the weight loss.

I took them at their word about the health improvements.

But I never believed food would make that much of a difference for me.

Still, there it was.

Another box to check.

So, I changed my diet.

🧠 What the Research Says

It turns out there is a growing body of research connecting Alzheimer’s to diet.

At its core, Alzheimer’s is associated with chronic inflammation. And while many factors can contribute to inflammation, what we eat is one of the most powerful.

Just this week, I listened to a recent interview with Dr. Georgia Ede, a Harvard-trained, board-certified psychiatrist and author of Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind. She affirms what now to me seems to be the obvious connection between food and health, including brain health.

Said Dr. Ede, "“Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t happen overnight… it’s preceded by decades of gradually slowing brain glucose metabolism.”

If you had tried to talk to me about my brain glucose metabolism, my eyes would have glazed over. But the part about decades of decline due to a poor diet? I felt seen! Unfortunately.

In plain English?

When we eat a steady stream of sugar and processed carbohydrates, our bodies struggle to manage that load. Over time, things begin to break down.

Most people think of Alzheimer’s as something you can’t control… but you can do a tremendous amount about your glucose and insulin levels."

🧠 She is right.

Within months of changing my diet, I realized I had reversed the worst of my early Alzheimer’s symptoms.

I didn't believe it would work.

I wasn't even looking for improvement, just hoping to slow the rate of my decline.

I had no hope, but I acted anyway.

Out of desperation. Out of fear. Out of guilt.

And, by golly, it worked.
